When your UCOP newsletter launched, we asked you to take a quick survey on what — and who — you wanted to see in it. We also encouraged you to suggest a name for it.

We know you’ve been waiting to see the results of the name, so, drum roll please…The new name is Link. (Though you probably already knew this by the banner at the top of the page.)

Why Link, you ask? In essence, Link stands for what this newsletter is all about: Linking you to the Office of the President, linking you to the UC system, linking you to your colleagues, linking you to important UCOP news and events and linking you to the mission of our university.

It’s remarkable that survey respondents’ feedback aligned so well with this name — many answers and comments revolved around building connections, staying in the loop, being linked to others, serving as a conduit for community, and so on.

Below you’ll find a list of common themes in the survey responses, as well as how Link will address them:

You want…to learn more about UCOP’s contribution to UC campuses. Link will…regularly feature departments and staff that are doing just that (check out the Puente story from a few weeks ago). After all, the Office of the President exists to serve the UC system.

You want…information about major UCOP initiatives, goals and strategic direction, budget developments, as well as the president’s activities and priorities. Link will…continue to provide you with the information and resources you need to stay informed on these topics. Occasionally, President Yudof and other senior leaders will address you through Link. We’ll also provide links to other publications or websites dealing with such topics.

You want…to learn more about UCOP divisions and departments. Link will…deliver profiles on divisions, departments and people within UCOP each week in the “In Profile” section.  If there are specific questions you have for departments, we encourage you to submit a comment so they can respond. Likewise, if you want to praise a department or person for the work they’re doing, this is a place to do it.

You want…to find out more about your colleagues. Link will…help you get to know your colleagues through the ever-popular 10-Second Bios and Off-the-Clock features. If you would like to submit a 10-Second Bio, or nominate someone to be featured in Off-the-Clock, we encourage you to do so.

You want…the opportunity to ask questions and give feedback concerning UCOP within the newsletter. But, some respondents are leery of doing so for fear of repercussions. Link will…give you the chance to comment on each article. It also has an Open Forum section for you to post comments, questions and ideas for your colleagues to respond to. Link is a chance for you to give productive feedback or make a suggestion. We realize you might not want to publish you entire name when making a comment, and you don’t have to. Simply give your first name, along with an email address — it remains confidential. That said, we wouldn’t publish any comments that contain profanity or libel.

Of course, for all of us to stay linked to one another, we need to know what’s going on in your world. What is your department up to? What’s a cool project you’re working on? Who are your colleagues? How are you contributing to UC? We want to know. So send us an email or post a comment — we look forward to hearing from you.
