Professor Carolyn de la Peña will discuss her new book

Come hear de la Peña discuss her new book, Empty Pleasures, on Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 12 – 1 p.m. in Franklin Building, Room 5320. Or watch it online at: www.ustream.tv/ucevents.

In Empty Pleasures, the first history of artificial sweeteners in the United States, de la Peña blends popular culture with business and women’s history, examining the invention, production, marketing, regulation, and consumption of sugar substitutes such as saccharin, Sucaryl, NutraSweet, and Splenda.

De la Peña doesn’t scold or scare, but rather tells the fascinating story of how this commonplace food product has transformed our relationship with food.
