New entry gates due in Franklin lobby

This is a reminder that when you arrive at 1111 Franklin on Monday, March 14, you will pass through new security gates to get to the elevators.

Not only are the current gates outdated, they also lack some essential security features that the new ones will provide, such as the ability to provide data on who is inside the building in the event of an emergency.

Using the new gates will require a simple swipe of your UCOP identity card, same as the current system, but swiping your ID will also be required to exit.

The new entry and exit turnstiles are scheduled for installation Saturday, March 12, and should be fully operational the following week, according to Roman Starno, chief building manager. (Depending on how smoothly installation goes, work may need to extend into the following weekend, Starno said.)

The system uses state-of-the art technology, complies with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act and is approved by the California State Fire Marshal.

Go here, then scroll down the page and click on the “videos” tab to see how the new turnstiles work.
