Barbara Allen-Diaz appointed ANR vice president

In an email dated Sept. 30, 2011, Provost and EVP for Academic Affairs Larry Pitts notified the UCOP community about the appointment of Barbara Allen-Diaz as ANR vice president. The full text follows below. Go to the UC Newsroom for the full story.

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that UC Berkeley Professor Barbara Allen-Diaz, associate vice president of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), has been appointed to a term position as systemwide vice president for Agriculture and Natural Resources, effective Oct. 1.

The UC Regents approved the appointment Sept. 15, making Barbara the first woman to head the division. She will report directly to me, leading the university’s research and outreach activities in food systems, environmental sciences, family and consumer sciences, forestry, community development, 4-H youth development and related areas.

She succeeds Dan Dooley, who has served since November 2008 as both ANR vice president and senior vice president for External Affairs, a dual appointment that is no longer feasible given the increasing demands of the two positions. Dan will continue to serve in an advisory capacity on issues related to agriculture and natural resources and ANR strategy.

Barbara will oversee ANR programs, which include Cooperative Extension and the Agricultural Experiment Station, located on UC’s Berkeley, Davis and Riverside campuses. The division operates nine research and extension centers and more than 50 county offices throughout the state, with nearly 1,000 Agricultural Experiment Station faculty, Cooperative Extension specialists and Cooperative Extension advisors.

Please join me in congratulating Barbara and wishing her success in her new assignment.

Sincerely,
Lawrence Pitts
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
