UCOP Singers seek pianist for holiday performances, rehearsals

Is it that time of year already? Yule bet! The UCOP Singers are rehearsing for their annual holiday performances, a heartwarming 37-year-old tradition at UCOP.

The group is seeking new talent this year, especially a keyboard accompanist for weekly rehearsals leading up to the holiday season and performances throughout the Franklin building the day of the holiday party (date to be announced).

It’s easy to join this season’s festivities. Rehearsals are held 12 to 1 p.m. every Wednesday in 6113 Franklin (except Oct. 31, when it will be in 9204 Franklin, and Nov. 21, when there will be no rehearsal). No need to audition or make an appointment; just show up with your heart full of song.

“We are always looking for tenors and basses,” says Charlotte Strem, assistant director of Physical and Environmental Planning and a longstanding member. “But this year we really need an accompanist. We have the keyboard and all the sheet music — all we need is the talent.”

The group also sings at other venues, including the Kaiser lobby and the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club around the holidays.

Daniel Scuiry, manager of Disbursements and Verifications in the Retirement Administration Service Center and another longtime member of the group, is directing this year. Cofounder Willie Archie, who directed the group beginning in 1975, retired in 2009.

If you would like to book the group for your office party or want to play the piano for people who love to sing, contact Scuiry at 510-987-0192 or daniel.scuiry@ucop.edu or Strem at 510-987-0113 or charlotte.strem@ucop.edu.
