Welcome David McCallen, AVP of Laboratory Programs

Please welcome David McCallen, who joined UCOP on Jan. 16 as associate vice president of Laboratory Programs in the Laboratory Management Office (LMO).

LMO provides management and oversight of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a member of the U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory system located near the Berkeley campus, which conducts unclassified research in a wide range of scientific disciplines. LMO also represents UC in its management and oversight role as a partner in the LLCs that operate Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national security labs.

As AVP of Lab Programs, McCallen will lead the university’s oversight of the scientific and mission programs at all three national laboratories as well as other contractual responsibilities to the Department of Energy (DOE) and its National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

McCallen has worked at Lawrence Livermore Lab for 30 years in leadership positions covering a broad range of laboratory programs, including the National Ignition Facility, Nuclear Systems Science and, most recently, Global Security.

Previously, he served as program leader for Nuclear Energy Safety Projects within the Earth Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. He is the current chairman of the UC Berkeley Department of Nuclear Engineering Advisory Committee. Also a UC alum, he received his M.S. and Ph.D. in engineering from UC Davis.

“David has strong technical credentials and successful management experience in programs relevant to the three UC-affiliated labs,” said Glenn Mara, vice president for Lab Management. “His knowledge of and relationships within the DOE/NNSA community, and his demonstrated ability to build collaborations with the academic community, commercial partners and government, make him uniquely qualified for his new role.”

McCallen is located at the 1111 Broadway building and can be reached at 510-987-9444 or david.mccallen@ucop.edu.
