Take charge of your career: Deadline for applications Dec. 11

Carlos Arias, UCOP senior mail processor

Carlos Arias, UCOP senior mail processor in the Work Management Center, said the Take Charge program helped him build both his confidence and communications skills.

Are you a UCOP employee in an administrative or support position looking for a way to advance your career?

You might consider UCOP’s Take Charge, a professional development program designed specifically for administrative and support staff. Now in its second year, the program is seeking applications for 2014, and the deadline is 5 p.m. this Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Carlos Arias, senior mail processor in the Work Management Center, said the program has been invaluable in helping him build confidence and improve his communications skills.

“The program really helped me put myself out there and gave me more confidence in communicating with my supervisors and clients,” Arias said. “It’s a great experience for anyone, and it’s offered right here at OP, so why not take advantage of it?” Another benefit of the course is the built-in support group of all the other participants, Arias added.

The course runs from January to July 2014 and includes workshops in managing up, self-promotion, negotiating, resume writing, networking and interviewing skills. Also included are self-guided assignments and peer mentoring sessions.

All eligible administrative and support staff are encouraged to apply by the deadline of Wednesday, Dec. 11. See the Take Charge website for criteria, answers to frequently asked questions and the 2014 application form. Up to 30 participants will be selected for next year’s program.

Take Charge is cosponsored by UCOP Local HR Learning & Development and the President’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (PACSW).
