UCOP to pilot UCPath, system to launch by year-end

UCPath, the updated and streamlined systemwide UC payroll and benefits system that has been in the works for three years, will begin its rollout at UCOP, with the system planned to be fully operational for UCOP employees by Jan. 1, 2015.

In a recent meeting with UCPath leadership, UC President Janet Napolitano emphasized the importance of the project, and its timely implementation, as a key component of the university’s goal of increasing operational efficiency.

Accordingly, she directed that the project’s timeline be accelerated and that UCOP transition to UCPath by the end of the 2014 calendar year.

When it is launched, all UCOP staff will use UCPath to handle their personalized medical benefits, leave accrual balances and other human resources services. (UCOP staff will continue to manage their retirement benefits through At Your Service Online.)

UCOP will be the first to go live, with other UC locations following in waves. When UCPath is fully implemented, all staff and faculty will use the same system for managing their personal health benefits as well as income and tax information. An implementation schedule for the other UC locations is now being developed and will be announced this spring.

Operational units at UCOP that will be administering UCPath — including payroll, human resources and benefits — are now developing new business processes and detailed plans for implementing the new system. They will then train frontline staff to support UCPath transactions and provide a smooth transition to the new system.

In the coming months, there will be regular communications with more information on UCPath through Link articles, brown bags and other resources. Training for UCOP staff on how to use the new UCPath portal will be available prior to launch.

Beyond systemwide cost reductions, UCPath will incorporate upgraded information technology, standardize and simplify processes and provide consistent personnel data throughout the UC system. Staff will have direct access to and be able to maintain more of their online personal employee information than they can now. The UCPath shared services center, located near the UC Riverside campus, will deliver online and one-on-one support.
