Cathy O’Sullivan appointed chief of staff to COO Rachael Nava

CathyOSullivanUCOP Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Rachael Nava issued the following announcement to the UCOP community on Monday, June 1:

Dear UCOP Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Cathy O’Sullivan as my chief of staff.

Cathy has held a number of positions since joining UCOP in 2003 as a strategic sourcing manager, converting an outdated contract system into a central contracts database accessible by all UC locations. More recently, she was the director of Working Smarter, the university-wide efficiency initiative aimed at redirecting $500 million from administration to teaching and research. Under her direction, the initiative has exceeded its goal of saving $100 million per year across a portfolio of 34 projects. At the same time, Cathy led the implementation of the UCOP Efficiency Review; was interim chief of staff to the UC-wide chief financial officer, co-leading the CFO/COO realignment; and, most recently, has been serving as my interim chief of staff.

Prior to joining UCOP, Cathy was a consultant, helping lead change management communications for a large retail client and introducing business process standards to early-stage technology companies. Previously, she was portfolio communications manager at Intel Capital, the venture capital division of Intel Corporation.

She holds an M.B.A. from UC Davis and a B.A. in Urban Planning and Public Policy from UC San Diego.

As chief of staff, Cathy will manage independent programs and professional staff engaged in various levels of management and administrative functions. She will serve as the senior consultant to and proxy for me on the development and implementation of operational strategies, including establishing overall objectives, identifying the necessary staffing, resources and internal project management structure, and ensuring objectives are met. In addition, she will oversee budget, facilities and maintenance, and strategic projects, as well as the immediate office.

Cathy’s knowledge of systemwide operations and programs, her demonstrated management abilities and the strong relationships she has built during her 12 years at UC make her an outstanding choice for this position. Please join me in welcoming Cathy to her new role.

Sincerely,

Rachael Nava
Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer
