MONEY magazine names seven UC campuses as “best value” colleges

In its annual ranking of best colleges for educational value, MONEY magazine placed seven UC campuses in the top 100. UC Berkeley came in fifth on the list and four other UC campuses ranked in the top twenty.

Overall, 705 colleges were ranked on 24 factors in three categories: educational quality, affordability, and alumni success. Comparative value was also measured, by assessing how well students at each school did vs. what’s expected for students with similar economic and academic background. This measurement was considered critical to determining how much of a contribution the college itself made to a student’s success. The breadth of each college’s offerings was also a factor, to avoid assigning undue weight to schools with a large number of graduates in majors that lead to higher paid careers, such as engineering.

Ranking of all UC campuses that were included on the list:

#5 – UC Berkeley

#14 – UC San Diego

#16 – UC Irvine

#17 – UC Davis

#20 – UCLA

#41 – UC Santa Cruz

#92 – UC Santa Barbara
