Diversity Speaker Series: Implicit Bias – What Is It and How Does it Impact Our Workplace and Community?

To kick off the new UCOP Diversity Speaker Series, professor Rodolfo (Rudy) Mendoza-Denton of UC Berkeley will be speaking about implicit bias and how it is prevalent in the workplace, community and in our homes. The new science of bias suggests that we all carry prejudices within ourselves — but we also have the tools to keep them in check.

Mendoza-Denton has lived in Mexico, Ivory Coast, Thailand and the U.S. These travels cemented an early interest in culture and intergroup relations. After receiving his B.A. at Yale University, he pursued a Ph.D. in social psychology at Columbia University under the mentorship of Walter Mischel and Geraldine Downey. He remained at Columbia for postdoctoral training, and joined the psychology faculty at UC Berkeley in 2002. He co-directs the Psychology department’s Relationships and Social Cognition Laboratory. His professional interests include stereotyping and prejudice from the perspective of both target and perceiver, intergroup relations, cultural psychology, and educational achievement. He is co-editor of “Are We Born Racist?” from Beacon Press, and writes a blog of the same name for Psychology Today.
