W-2s, exemptions, and other tax and payroll news

Some important updates and reminders pertaining to taxes and payroll:

W-2s for your 2016 taxes

  • Printed W-2s will be mailed by Jan. 31 to the address you have on file.
  • Electronic W-2s will be available for viewing on UCPath after Jan. 20.
  • UC will send you a printed W-2 unless you request an electronic version. If you haven’t already done so, you can request an electronic W-2 until Jan. 19 by selecting “Enroll to Receive Online W-2” under the “Income and Taxes” pull-down menu on UCPath’s main page. Note: If you are a new hire, you’ll need to have received a  paycheck before requesting an electronic W-2 copy.
  • Important: UC does not send W-2s by email or text. You must log in to UCPath to view your electronic W-2 (if you have requested one). If you receive an email or text with an attachment for viewing your W-2, it is a phishing scam designed to gain your private information. Scammers may also send emails with fraudulent links. To access your W-2 statement, you must go directly to the UCPath site and log in. See this Link article for more information about this type of scam.

Claiming exemption from withholding

The IRS requires you to complete a new W-4 form each year if you are claiming exemption from tax withholding. If you wish to claim exemption from withholding in 2017, you must make this choice on UCPath online before Feb. 15, 2017. To learn how, click here.

Dependent information

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires employers to make reasonable efforts to obtain Social Security numbers for its employees and their spouses/domestic partners and dependents. Take a moment to log in to UCPath and review and update your dependent information by selecting “Dependent Coverage” in the Benefits menu.
