Update on 1100 Broadway: Food trucks and fun summer activities coming to vacant lot

As we announced in February, after lengthy and detailed study of how to reduce facility costs and improve operational efficiency, UCOP has signed a lease for office space in a building to be constructed at 1100 Broadway (currently the vacant lot adjacent to our Franklin building). The consolidation of all UCOP staff into Franklin Street and the adjacent new building will not only allow us to save in our Oakland-based real estate related costs, but may have additional benefits that will grow from closer proximity and collaboration. Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year, with completion by the end of 2019.

Over the summer, while construction is in the planning stages, the city of Oakland has asked the property owners, Ellis Partners and Intercontinental Real Estate Corporation, to make the lot available for local activities, including live concerts, food trucks, vendor fairs and other special events. Named The Lot on Broadway, the temporary venue will provide a welcoming platform to celebrate Oakland, support local businesses and showcase the city’s musical talent.

UCOP staff working in downtown Oakland will have the opportunity to enjoy these activities beginning with the June 21 kick-off of the lunchtime series “Off the Grid – Downtown Oakland at The Lot.” Taking place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., this ongoing event will feature the Bay Area’s best food trucks, comfortable seating and live music. Additional city-sponsored events on The Lot are likely to take place only after business hours or on weekends.

Starting in late June, information about scheduled activities at The Lot will be posted at http://www.oaklandcentral.com/thelot/. In the meantime, you might want to check out the main Oakland Central site, which covers downtown Oakland’s shopping, dining, arts and entertainment, and community events.

We’ll continue to keep you posted here in Link about developments related to the lot and the building construction.

We hope that our Oakland staff enjoys the chance to sample some great food and entertainment downtown this summer.
