An update on this year’s performance-based merit process at UCOP

We appreciate the time and effort you have contributed to improving our performance evaluation process. Thanks to your participation and partnership, we have successfully completed the review portion of our annual performance cycle. As a final step, managers, supervisors, and staff who have not already done so are reminded to go into Halogen and finalize their reviews. Quick reference guides on how to do this can be found here.

Following the approval of the UCOP budget by the Board of Regents at their July meeting, the process for determining and awarding merit increases is now underway. UCOP division leaders, human resources staff, managers and supervisors will be working to make those determinations over the coming weeks with the goal of notifying employees by mid-September of their eligibility for a merit increase.

Increases will be effective as follows:

  • For UCOP employees who are paid monthly, merit increases will be retroactive to July 1, 2017 and paid in the Oct. 1, 2017 paycheck.
  • For UCOP employees who are paid biweekly, merit increases will be retroactive to June 18, 2017 and paid in the Sept. 20 paycheck.

Note: Represented employees do not participate in the merit program because their compensation and benefits are governed by their union contract.

Should you have any questions about this process, please contact your supervisor/manager or your HR Business Partner.

The actual pay date for September is the 29th of September, 2017.

      Hi Christopher,

Thanks for your comment. The biweekly pay date is Sept. 20, as this article states. The monthly paycheck date is Oct. 1, but you are right that the actual payday is Sept. 29 since Oct. 1 falls on a weekend.

The following response is from Executive Director of UCOP Human Resources Nancy Pluzdrak:

Thank you for your questions, Marc. We do have criteria for merit-based increases: Non-represented UCOP staff members hired on or before Dec. 31, 2016 are eligible for a merit increase if they received a 2016 annual performance rating of “Development Needed/New and Learning (tracking up)” or higher. Certain categories of employees, such as those classified as Rehired Retirees, Limited, Students, Floaters or those covered by Academic Personnel Policies, are not eligible for a merit increase.

Your manager can help you better understand how performance is linked to pay. The goal setting training and the annual performance training that was recently conducted provided clear parameters around effective goal setting and how performance is evaluated.
