Find out what the Aug. 21 solar eclipse will look like where you are

Are you wondering what the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21 will look like at your location?

A unique simulator produced by the Eclipse Megamovie Project – a collaboration between UC Berkeley and Google – has just what you need.

You can enter the ZIP code or name of your city or town and see an animation of how the sun will move across the sky over a three-hour period – sped up 1,000 or 4,000 times – and how much of a bite will be taken out of the sun by the eclipsing moon. In California, we’re not in the path of totality but we’ll still have a significant eclipse.

“There are lots of online animations of the 2017 eclipse, but you can’t use them like ours to get a sense of the full experience, including your surroundings,” said Dan Zevin, who is with the Multiverse education team that is leading the project at UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory. “Our simulation is closer to what one might experience in a planetarium show.”

Visit the eclipse simulator page to preview what it will look like from any location. In the box at the top of the page, enter the city and state or the zip code of the location you’re curious about and then hit the play button at bottom of page.

During the actual eclipse, make sure you know how to protect your eyes. NASA has published safe viewing information on this page: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety

Can we go on the roof to watch?

Our building services folks say the Franklin building roof will be open starting @ 10 a.m. You can access the roof by climbing to the very top of Stairwell 1. You will need to bring your own eclipse glasses or other viewing devices that are certified to be safe.
