UCOP Theater Night

The critics have spoken! The S.F. Chronicle’s theater critic applauds TheatreFIRST’s production “Between Us” for portraying “historical figures…as close and urgent as if they’re whispering sweet insurrection in your ear.” In particular, she praises the program selected for UCOP Theater Night, in which the “pieces transcend because their storytellers need to speak.” Read the full review.

Experience this transcendence for yourself at a special event sponsored by OP Staff Assembly:

Date: Thursday, March 1
Time: 8 p.m.
Location: Live Oak Theater, 1301 Shattuck, Berkeley (near Gourmet Ghetto)
Cost: Discounted $20 tickets for UC staff, their family and friends (no limit) with the promotional code “NELLE”. UCOP staff can also enjoy a free beverage before the show or at intermission!

The TheatreFIRST production “BETWEEN US” invites you to meet a leader of the Delano Grape Strike, a woman attending her first protest, a voodoo queen, and a black woman contemplating the first Martin Luther King holiday.

The “BETWEEN US” production is split into two separate performances, Program A and Program B. UCOP Theater Night on March 1 is for Program A, which consists of the four short monologues described below. The entire show will be about two hours, plus a 15-minute intermission.

Purchase your ticket(s) directly on the TheatreFIRST website. After selecting “Program A” on that page, then the March 1 performance date and the seat you prefer in the ticket window, enter “NELLE” in the “Promotional Code” box to obtain the discounted ticket price of $20.

“BETWEEN US” PROGRAM A:

Laveau: A Conjuring of Marie Laveau

In the pre-Civil War antebellum south, the voodoo queen Marie Laveau built and preserved space for Africans to worship their religion openly and to practice black joy freely. Now, in the midst of present day black genocide, Laveau is conjured to empower a spiritual revolution where Black Lives Matter and the black woman is God.

Seven Fingers: The Story of Larry Itliong

Larry Itliong describes his journey from young immigrant to father of the Delano Grape Strike, which spurred the formation of the United Farm Workers.

Pussy Hat: The Story of One Woman’s March

A middle-aged white woman attends a protest march for the first time in her life. Good intentions meet the reality of a lifelong absence from activism.

Just One Day: A Story of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy

The day before the first official observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a working wife and mother of two contemplates what the holiday means for both white and black people in a rural Southern town.
