Wednesday: Stigma-free UC webinar: Understanding mental illness stigma

As UC’s year-long Stigma-Free UC effort enters its final few months, the first speaker in the series returns to offer further insights into the causes and costs of mental health stigma. Stephen Hinshaw, professor of psychology at UC Berkeley and of psychiatry at UCSF, will present a systemwide webinar on Oct. 3 about the stubborn persistence of stigma despite advancements in our understanding of, and treatment options for, mental illness.

Hinshaw has explored mental health stigma throughout his distinguished research career and in a 2017 book about his personal family history, “Another Kind of Madness: A Journey through the Stigma and Hope of Mental Illness.”

All UC faculty and staff are invited to attend the webinar, which is part of the Systemwide WellBeing Initiative’s “Stigma-Free UC effort to raise awareness about mental health issues and reduce barriers to treatment.
