10-Second Bio: Carol Lake, resilient survivor

Carol Lake, Financial Analyst IV – Risk Management

Meet Carol Lake, financial analyst IV – risk management. Carol’s accounting and finance skills for Risk Services are even more impressive when considering her journey to overcome severe cognitive trauma.

Name: Carol Lake

Title: Financial Analyst IV – Risk Management

Department/Unit: Risk Services

Location: Oakland

When I started working at UCOP: 2011

What I do in 5 words or less: Accounting and finance for Risk Services

Best part about working for OP: The people!

Something you don’t know about me: I nearly died at age 18 when a car traveling at 50 mph hit me. My shattered bones eventually healed, but a severe coma changed me cognitively — I went from being a top high school student to comprehending at a 12-year-old’s level. It was a long, arduous journey back, but I taught myself how to learn again. I also discovered that positivity and perseverance were keys to not only my recovery, but to lifelong success and personal happiness. My story was included in this year’s “Chicken Soup for the Soul” anthology, titled “Think Positive, Live Happy.” The theme of my story is “Keep Learning. Keep Growing.”

One weird fact about the town I grew up in: Tonawanda, New York is a suburb of Buffalo and one winter it snowed 5 feet in 72 hours! We couldn’t open the door to our house and the only way you could get around was by snowmobile. Now you see why I moved to California.

If I could have any job in the world (besides the one I have now), I would be: The founder of an organization that brings positivity and a sense of optimism into people’s lives.
