Susan Carlson appointed Vice Provost of Academic Personnel

The UC Board of Regents, at its May 19 meeting, confirmed the appointment of Susan Carlson as Vice Provost of Academic Personnel, effective July 12, 2010.

Key responsibilities for this position include the development of programs, initiatives and policies to support faculty recruitment, development, retention and the training of new academic leaders, as well oversight of faculty and academic affirmative action and diversity programs.

Provost Lawrence H. Pitts, in announcing the appointment, said that Carlson will be a member of the Office of the President senior leadership team, and will work closely with the Academic Senate, UCOP and campus executives to help ensure university priorities are met.

“Susan brings to UC an impressive combination of professional experience and qualifications,” Pitts said. “The Vice Provost of Academic Personnel serves a critical leadership role for the university.  Successfully attracting and retaining quality faculty and other academic talent is one of the university’s highest priorities, and the effective development and management of academic personnel policies and programs plays a critical role in this effort. As the university contemplates how best to maintain and improve the quality of its academic programs, it is critical that UC have quality leadership overseeing its academic personnel programs.”

Carlson recently served as both Interim Provost and Associate Provost at Iowa State University, where her responsibilities included faculty affairs, diversity and leadership initiatives, and academic restructuring.

During her tenure at Iowa State University Carlson directed promotion and tenure policy, faculty recruitment and retention initiatives, flexible faculty career planning and faculty data collection. Working with the Faculty Senate there, Carlson also developed policies for part-time appointments, non-tenure-eligible faculty and faculty advancement. Carlson also presently serves on the executive board for the Office of Women in Higher Education, and she advises several ADVANCE programs.

Carlson is a professor of English, with two books and numerous publications on dramatic comedy, women playwrights, and British theatre. She holds a PhD and an MA from the University of Oregon, and a BA from the University of Iowa.
