Yudof statement on President Obama’s affordability initiative

University of California President Mark G. Yudof made the following statement on Aug. 22 about President Barack Obama’s proposals to make colleges more accountable and affordable:

“We at the University of California applaud President Obama for his initiative. As a 10-campus research university whose hallmark is the combination of high quality and broad accessibility, we have embraced making public higher education more accountable and affordable. Thanks to federal Pell Grants, the state’s Cal Grants program and our own Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, half of our California resident undergraduates have their full tuition covered by financial aid. Nearly half of UC students graduate with no loan debt, and the average debt upon graduation for those who do borrow is roughly $7,000 below the national average. UC’s graduation rates and time to degree rank high among public universities. And we are developing additional online offerings to further expand access to high-demand courses. Yet there is always more that can be done to ensure transparency and access, and we look forward to working with the Obama Administration toward achievement of shared goals.”
