SUMMARY:Implicit bias presentation and discussion
DESCRIPTION:Diversity and Engagement is hosting a discussion about implicit bias and some of the various implicit bias trainings available through UC. Implicit bias refers to the stereotypes and attitudes people have toward specific populations in their social environment. Biases that are both favorable and unfavorable toward groups are informed by the cultural norms and stigmas of an individual’s social environment\, and therefore can be activated unconsciously. \nWhether you have completed one — or several — trainings or webinars\, your participation is welcomed. Which of the proposed interventions can you apply in your area of impact? In what areas\, if any\, do you remain skeptical of the implicit bias training movement? \nJoin UC colleagues for reflection and dialogue about the trainings\, and how and whether implicit bias is present in your work. Note that there are recommended activities that we encourage all participants to complete before the discussion; they’re listed on the registration form. \nTae-Sun Kim\, Manager of Strategic Diversity Initiatives\, UC Office of the President\, will facilitate the discussion. \nTo register\, sign up at http://bit.ly/may-1-webinar. Please note that registration is limited to 50 participants. \nTo join: https://ucop.zoom.us/j/7520148046 \nQuestions? Please contact Alexandra Lozanoff at alexandra.lozanoff@ucop.edu

SUMMARY:Stigma-Free UC: Mass Shootings\, Firearms and the Mental Health System
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of mass shootings\, there is often public discussion about the relationship between mental illness and violence\, and outcry that the mental health system does not do more to stop these horrific events. Amy Barnhorst\, medical director of a county crisis unit and 50-bed psychiatric hospital\, will discuss the ways in which this response risks both increasing stigma against people with mental illness and drawing the focus away from other groups of people at higher risk of violence. \nBarnhorst is vice chair for Community Psychiatry at UC Davis\, where her academic interests include violence and suicide prevention\, firearm policy\, international psychiatry\, and community mental health delivery systems. Barnhorst has written multiple papers on firearms\, mental illness and the law\, and has testified before the California and Alaska Senates on these issues. \nAll UC faculty\, staff and students are invited to attend this webinar\, sponsored by the Systemwide WellBeing Initiative. \nTo view the slideshow online\, go to UCOP.zoom.us/j/5109879443. To join by phone\, dial 408-638-0968 and enter meeting ID: 510 987 9443.
