SUMMARY:Influencing Without Authority
DESCRIPTION:Pre-registration is required for all classes.\nClasses take place in downtown Oakland.\nLog into UC Learning Center (UCLC) to pre-register and see full class description and location.\n\nThe ability to exercise influence without authority is one of the most important skills of an effective professional. This course will develop the learner’s capability to assess and increase influential power to accomplish objectives. \nEffectively exercising influence\, even when one may not have the formal authority to mandate action\, is a challenge many face. Whether working in a matrix organization or leading a cross functional team\, the goal is to contribute one’s best\, support the organization\, and ensure goals are met. \nTo exercise influence without authority\, it is important to understand the nature of power and influence in the organization\, understand personal sources of influence\, and know how to leverage personal political power. Successful professionals build networks of relationships with stakeholders and influencers. This course introduces the skills necessary to employ these interpersonal and leadership skills and to manage the often complex relationship dynamics of the workplace. \nThis 4-hour workshop explores the primary strategies of influence –reciprocity\, communicating to influence\, and influencing styles. The participant will learn how to select the most appropriate strategy for the circumstances.

SUMMARY:Information session: Becoming an EBCF mentor
DESCRIPTION:President Napolitano has designated UCOP as a partner of Oakland Promise\, an initiative to triple the number of Oakland youth that graduate from college within the next 10 years. The lead agency\, East Bay College Fund (EBCF)\, provides students with college scholarships and mentoring to help qualified need-based Oakland students prepare for\, attend\, and succeed at UC campuses. \nThis year\, EBCF hopes to match 300 dedicated new mentors with four-year scholarship recipients. You could become one of them! The amount of time required for volunteering is very reasonable: Mentors commit to attend two “retreats” and have at least one interaction per month with the student while they are in college. These could occur in-person or by phone\, text\, Google Hangout or Skype. \nTo learn more about becoming a mentor\, join UCOP and EBCF staff at this brown bag information session. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Deanna Berg\, director of Constituent Partnerships\, at 510-987-0889 or  deanna.berg@ucop.edu.
