SUMMARY:Brown bag: At Risk World Heritage and Cyber-Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:At-Risk World Heritage and Cyber-Archaeology: A UC President’s Research Catalyst Award Project
\nThe destruction of world cultural heritage is an acute problem from the damage done to archaeological sites by the Islamic State and other groups in the Middle East. Last year\, the speaker received a grant from UCOP for ‘At-Risk World Heritage and the Digital Humanities’ to tackle this crisis through cultural preservation. In collaboration with archaeology faculty at UC Berkeley\, Los Angeles\, and Merced\, this project incorporates over 10\,000 years of cultural materials\, architecture\, and landscapes. The lecture will present an overview of this UC campus-wide partnership\, which uses conventional and modern techniques to study the effects of disasters—both natural and manmade—and forecast endangered sites. \nSpeaker Thomas Levy is Distinguished Professor and holds the Norma Kershaw Chair in the Archaeology of Ancient Israel and Neighboring Lands at the University of California\, San Diego. \nQuestions about this event? SUMMARY:Diversity Speaker Series: Insights from Insects
DESCRIPTION:How can viewing life from the perspective of an insect help you become a better person? \nTo find out\, come to this month’s Diversity Speaker Series event featuring Ralph Washington\, Jr.\, who will speak on the topic\, “Insights from Insects: Life Lessons from the Small and Short-lived.” This event is co-sponosored by Joanna Trammell\, program manager of Culture\, Engagement\, and Diversity\, and the Black Staff and Faculty Organization. \nWashington will explain how his pursuit of entomology is directly responsible for every important thing that has happened in his life\, and how viewing the world from the perspective of an insect has helped him maintain empathy for himself and others. \nWashington is a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow\, a third-year graduate student in Entomology\, and a two-time National and International Champion of entomological natural history trivia. SUMMARY:Getting to Know: Event Services Group (ESG)
DESCRIPTION:ESG was established in 2010 and has grown exponentially over the last six years.  Most employees see the ESG at OP social events\, but did you know they support over 200 events a year and three-quarters of them are held outside of an OP building? \nAt this session\, you will learn how ESG can support your department’s next meeting or conference\, what the group’s services do and do not entail\, and what the nominal cost is to receive their support.  Even if you already use ESG’s services\, this session will provide a broader understanding of how the team functions and will also give you an opportunity to meet other planners on the team you may not have previously worked with. \nSnacks and beverages will be provided\, but feel free to bring your lunch. \nQuestions about this event?
