Enjoy a special fruit tasting at Franklin breakfast this Friday

If you love fruit — like the pears and apples that are at their best this time of year — get ready for a treat at this week’s Friday breakfast in the Franklin building.

Frog Hollow Farm, a 133-acre farm in the Sacramento River Delta, is holding a tasting to spread the word about its products and explore a subscription service at UCOP’s Franklin building.

The tasting, which will feature Asian and European pears and apples, will be set up outside Franklin Lobby 1 Conference Room. Come early and enjoy some fresh, certified organic fruit with your hot breakfast!

Frog Hollow provides community supported agriculture (CSA) services, the same arrangement UCOP has with Full Belly Farm and a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a small local farm.

If you’re interested in participating, you can learn more at the tasting. Weekly fruit boxes will weigh at least 7 pounds and contain a mix of seasonal fruit. At least 15 subscribers will be needed to begin the service.

A coordinator is also needed to support the program, said Charlotte Strem, assistant director of Physical and Environmental Planning, who serves as coordinator for the Full Belly Farm CSA program.

Coordinator tasks include serving as liaison between the farm and UCOP subscribers, handling table setup and box distribution each Tuesday, and doing publicity such as putting up signs and answering questions about the program. If you’re interested in volunteering or learning more about the coordinator role, contact Strem at Charlotte.Strem@ucop.edu.

Frog Hollow Farm is a certified organic farm that has been committed to sustainable practices since 1989. It is home to hundreds of trees that produce peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, apriums, plums, pluots, pears, apples, olives, persimmons, quince and more. Through their website they also sell fruit pastries, dried and spreadable fruit and gift sets.
