SERG and OPSA shared the greenest ways to wrap up the year

The highlight of 2023 for the UCOP Sustainability Employee Resource Group (SERG) took place just a few weeks ago — at the group’s holiday wrap parties, which were cohosted by the OP Staff Assembly (OPSA) and took place both virtually, at the UCPath Center, and in Oakland.

SERG and OPSA members kicked off a presentation that explained how wasteful holiday wrapping paper can be — and suggested options for more sustainable options, like paper grocery bags and natural fiber-based ribbons and papers.

They also shared a helpful list for sustainable gift ideas, including:

  • Experiences like the museum, zoo or a hike do not generate waste and can create lasting memories
  • Gift cards to places the individual enjoys
  • DIY baking kits in reusable jars (hot chocolate, cookies, etc.)
  • Food gifts (See’s Candies, homemade gifts)
  • Used books

Finally, SERG and OPSA colleagues offered tips for cultivating mindfulness around the holiday season. Examples included gardening, leisurely walks, cloud watching, watching wildlife, mindful breathing and a guided meditation.

The presentation ended with positive sustainability news from 2023 and a reminder to practice gratitude — for yourself, our planet and others.
