Los Alamos Lab’s William Priedhorsky to speak July 19

Professor William Priedhorsky of Los Alamos National Laboratory will speak at UCOP on Tuesday, July 19, 12 p.m. in 11326 Franklin. The subject of his talk is “Laboratory-Directed Research and Development: Investing in the Future of Los Alamos. “
Priedhorsky is Program Director of Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) at Los Alamos, a science and technology reinvestment program at the Department of Energy (DOE) Labs, including Los Alamos.
The research and development (R&D) sponsored by LDRD is intended to build capabilities to carry out several laboratory missions and explore new mission solutions. LDRD projects are selected through a rigorous proposal and peer review process that draws on federal guidelines for R&D but is tailored to fit the circumstances of a national laboratory.
To optimize the impact of scarce LDRD resources, the outcome of LDRD projects is tracked by several means, both statistical and expert-based. Success stories from LDRD at Los Alamos, and also Sandia and Livermore, can be found at tri-lab.lanl.gov.
The Los Alamos LDRD program is considered by federal overseers to be the model for DOE LDRD systems. Lessons learned from Los Alamos LDRD may have some value for other internal R&D competitions, including those within the University of California.
