Academic Council voices concerns about online ed legislation in Sacramento: On April 24, the Academic Council met in Sacramento to allow UC faculty leaders to testify in opposition to Senate Bill 520 at a hearing of the state Senate Education Committee.
Report details trends for faculty workload and UC performance outcomes: Does it feel as if you are teaching more students in larger classes than just a few years ago? Not everyone in Sacramento thinks so, but a report presented in May to the regents and governor suggests you are not alone.
Online learning technology initiative taps faculty expertise: A new systemwide initiative seeks to tap existing UC faculty expertise to develop an array of credit-bearing online and hybrid courses over the next three years, using an anticipated $10 million in annual funding set aside in the governor’s UC budget for new online learning technologies.
Irvine’s Mary Gilly elected 2013–14 senate vice chair: Mary C. Gilly, professor of management in the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business, has been elected 2013–14 Academic Senate vice chair.
Senate committee vets presidential candidates: A Senate committee has been meeting weekly to vet candidates for UC President. The Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) also has met twice with the Regents’ Special Committee to Consider the Selection of a President, to advise it on the qualities the faculty want in a president and on the qualifications of particular candidates.
