Riverside and Santa Cruz campuses lauded as LGBT-friendly

Two University of California campuses have been included in Campus Pride’s annual list of Top 25 LGBT-Friendly Colleges and Universities nationwide.

UC Riverside and UC Santa Cruz were among the schools noted for their inclusive campus climate as indicated through the Campus Pride Index. The index assesses campus climate through the lens of eight LGBT-friendly factors: policy inclusion, support and institutional commitment, academic life, student life, housing, campus safety, counseling and health, and recruitment and retention efforts.

Each of the 25 campuses achieved five-star overall ratings, as well as five stars in sexual orientation and in gender identity/expression. Campuses had to earn at least 4.5 stars in all eight factors in order to be included.

Campus Pride is a nationally recognized organization dedicated to making colleges and universities safer, more inclusive places for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. The list was published Aug. 20 on Huffington Post.
