Notes from Academic Senate Chair Robert Powell: The outgoing chair reflects on the year that was and current issues before the Senate and the University of California.

Senate approves open access policy: The Academic Council has approved an open access policy for faculty publications that will be implemented on a pilot basis at three UC campuses beginning this November.

UC seeks online course proposals from faculty: A Request for Proposals for the Innovative Learning Technology Initiative (ILTI) has been released to UC Senate faculty. The ILTI is UC’s plan for funding online and hybrid course development with $10 million the governor has asked UC to set aside for online learning technologies. More information, along with the application and instructions for submitting a proposal, can be found on the ILTI website. The first RFP phase ends Sept. 1, 2013.

Regents vote to strengthen faculty speech protections: The Board of Regents has approved a revision to policy, initiated by the University Committee on Academic Freedom and approved by the Assembly of the Academic Senate, which explicitly articulates the academic freedom right of the UC faculty to speak on matters of institutional policy.
