UC children’s hospitals rank among best nationally

The University of California’s three children’s hospitals — at Davis, Los Angeles and San Francisco — all rank among the nation’s top pediatric hospitals, according to the new 2012-13 Best Children’s Hospitals survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report.

This year’s survey evaluates the top 50 hospitals in 10 pediatric specialties.

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital was recognized for excellence in nine of the 10 specialties, Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA in eight and UC Davis Children’s Hospital in four. In addition, UC’s two other medical center campuses are affiliated with ranked children’s hospitals — UC Irvine is affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Orange County (ranked in five specialties) and UC San Diego is affiliated with Rady Children’s Hospital (ranked in all 10 specialties).

The rankings for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital include gastroenterology (18), nephrology (23), diabetes and endocrinology (27), heart and heart surgery (27), urology (29), neurology and neurosurgery (36), neonatology (40), pulmonology (43) and cancer (44).

The rankings for Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA include diabetes and endocrinology (9), nephrology (9), gastroenterology (13), neurology and neurosurgery (20), cancer (23), heart and heart surgery (26), neonatology (31) and orthopedics (50).

“We are proud that Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA was once again ranked among some of the nation’s best children’s hospitals,” said Dr. Sherin Devaskar, the hospital’s physician-in-chief and UCLA’s assistant vice chancellor for children’s health, who holds the Mattel Executive Endowed Chair in the UCLA Department of Pediatrics.

UC Davis Children’s Hospital ranked No. 30 in urology, 40 in orthopedics, 48 in diabetes and endocrinology, and 50 in nephrology.

“These rankings are much-deserved recognition of our pediatric specialists, their teams and their collaborators who provide world-class care to children,” said Ann Madden Rice, chief executive officer of UC Davis Medical Center and its children’s hospital. “Their passion and commitment to solving some of the most difficult issues in children’s health — from obesity to rare kidney diseases — in a comforting, expert and family-centered environment is unparalleled.”
