It’s your performance! Get involved in the performance review process

Did you achieve something in your job this year that got you really excited? Why not use it as an inspiration to get working on this year’s self-appraisal?

It’s time again for UCOP’s annual performance reviews, due this fall for performance during the period July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2012. Performance reviews are required for every employee to provide feedback on performance for the past year and give everyone a role in their own job satisfaction and career development.

“At the end of the performance review process, each employee should know where he or she stands and receive specific guidance toward future success,” said John Fox, executive director of UCOP local Human Resources. Fox kicked off the performance review season last week by sending notices to all managers and employees.

Fox and his team in UCOP Local HR have prepared a range of resources to make the performance appraisal process as straightforward, consistent and rewarding as possible. These include classroom sessions for both supervisors and employees, frequently asked questions and a summary of quick facts, all of which can be found on the UCOP performance management website.

Particularly useful for employees is the class Employee Role in Performance Appraisals, a two-hour course that gives pointers for collaborating with your supervisor, taking an active role in the evaluation process and ensuring that it includes a professional development plan. The following sessions are available:

  • Tuesday, July 10, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., 1217 Kaiser
  • Thursday, July 12, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., 612 Kaiser
  • Tuesday, July 17, 9 to 11 a.m., 5320 Franklin
  • Thursday, July 19, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 12322 Franklin

Also offered are two workshops that all managers and supervisors are strongly encouraged to take if they have not already done so, particularly those who are new in a managerial or supervisorial role. Sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • Setting Performance Expectations: Tuesday, July 10, 10325 Franklin, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Conducting Performance Appraisals: Thursday, July 19, 10325 Franklin, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Setting Performance Expectations: Thursday, Aug. 2, 12322 Franklin, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Conducting Performance Appraisals: Wednesday, Aug. 22, 12322 Franklin, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Go to the UCOP Learning Center to sign up for all classroom sessions.

This year all employees, including those exclusively represented by unions, will be evaluated using the same forms in an effort to establish a consistent process for all OP employees. There are two forms, one for employees who supervise others and one for non-supervisory employees, both of which are available on the UCOP performance management website.

Individual departments may have established their own completion dates for steps in the review process, and those schedules should be adhered to. Any departmental timeline should work within UCOP’s final deadline of Oct. 1, 2012, for all signed appraisals to be completed and returned to the department’s HR generalist.
