Personal travel outside U.S. now eligible for insurance coverage

UC employees and students traveling on official university business have long benefited from great travel insurance. Now you can also purchase great coverage for your personal travel outside the United States.

The new Blue and Gold Travel Accident Protection Program for personal travel is available for UCOP employees to purchase for themselves, their families and traveling companions. Coverage requires that each traveler enroll individually, and employees are responsible for paying the premium.

The program was developed by UC’s Office of Risk Services in conjunction with ACE USA, UC’s travel insurance carrier.

Coverage includes medical emergencies when traveling outside your home country or country of permanent residence. It provides emergency medical services, including accident and sickness benefits, emergency medical and security evacuation, replacement of prescription medication and eyeglasses, pre-travel resources and other valuable travel assistance services.

There are two plan options, the Blue Plan and the enhanced Gold Plan, providing coverage for as little as $21.20 per week. There are also options to increase the medical expense maximum and limits for accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D).

Go to the Risk Services Personal Travel Program website to find a full description of the coverage and premium rates, access the brochure and enroll. For more on travel assistance for official business travel, check the UC traveler insurance coverage site.

The Blue and Gold Travel Accident Protection Program is being offered as an option for employees to purchase on their own for personal travel. It is not affiliated with any university-provided employee benefit, and the university is not making any recommendation.

As with any commercial travel insurance you purchase, the traveler is responsible for paying the premium, arranging for any travel assistance services, and resolving any claim or coverage issues and disputes directly with the carrier.

If you need assistance with the enrollment process, please contact the ACE USA Enrollment Services Department at or call 888-293-9229 Ext. 600.
