Sexual Assault Awareness Month continues with brown bags, Denim Day

UCOP joined the national effort to raise awareness about sexual violence with several brown bag talks and Denim Day as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.

April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month during which advocates work to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities around the nation about how to prevent sexual assault.

Below is a list of planned events at OP for the rest of the month:

Wednesday, April 15: Brown bag on understanding UC’s Policy on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence, 12-1 p.m. Franklin 5320

Monday, April 27: Brown bag with clinical psychologist Christine Isana Garcia on trauma awareness, 12-1 p.m. Franklin 5320

Wednesday, April 29 is Denim Day: The national Denim Day movement was triggered by a 1990s ruling in which the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices felt that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against misconceptions around sexual assault.  Learn more about this awareness event here.

Here at OP, the Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers confidential emotional support and other resources to employees who have experienced sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating and domestic violence and stalking. To access the FSAP or learn about other resources, visit the UCOP webpages on sexual violence response and prevention.

To make a report of sexual violence or sexual harassment, you can contact UCOP’s Sexual Harassment Officer Katya Nottie at Katya.Nottie@ucop.edu.

Campuses around the UC system also have events and activities planned in April as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

UC is implementing a comprehensive approach for effectively responding to and preventing sexual violence.
