UC children’s hospitals rank among best in nation

The University of California’s three children’s hospitals — Davis, Los Angeles and San Francisco — all rank among the nation’s best in treating sick kids, according to the new 2015-16 Best Children’s Hospitals survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report.

This year’s report, published June 9, can be viewed online. The rankings highlight U.S. News’ top 50 pediatric facilities in 10 specialties.

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals and Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA were recognized for excellence in nine specialties, while UC Davis Children’s Hospital was ranked in five specialties. In addition, UC’s two other medical center campuses are affiliated with ranked children’s hospitals — UC San Diego is affiliated with Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego (ranked in all 10 specialties for the fifth year in a row), and UC Irvine is affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Orange County (ranked in eight specialties).

The rankings for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals include diabetes and endocrinology (8), nephrology (10), cancer (12), neurology and neurosurgery (13), neonatology (16), gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery (18), pulmonology (19), urology (22), and cardiology and heart surgery (25).

The rankings for Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA include nephology (11), gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery (14), orthopedics (18), urology (19), neonatology (20), neurology and neurosurgery (26), cardiology and heart surgery (28), diabetes and endocrinology (28) and cancer (37).

Together with Shriners Hospital for Children – Northern California, its longstanding partner in caring for children with burns, spinal cord injuries, urological issues and orthopedic disorders, UC Davis Children’s Hospital ranked 20th in urology and 29th in orthopedics. UC Davis Children’s Hospital also ranked 17th in neonatology, 33rd in diabetes and endocrinology, and 45th in neurology and neurosurgery.

The rankings for Rady Children’s include orthopedics (2), diabetes and endocrinology (15), neurology and neurosurgery (19), cancer (25), neonatology (25), pulmonology (33), cardiology and heart surgery (35), gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery (37), urology (37) and nephrology (38).

The rankings for Children’s Hospital of Orange County include neonatology (21), diabetes and endocrinology (24), neurology and neurosurgery (31), pulmonology (34), urology (36), orthopedics (40), cancer (42) and gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery (47).
