University of California campuses dominate global rankings

All 10 University of California campuses were included on a list of the 1,000 best universities in the world, issued this month by the Center for World University Rankings.
UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego and UC San Francisco were among the top 30 in the global rankings. The list of the 1,000 top universities was compiled based on eight quantifiable factors, including quality of education, quality of faculty, alumni employment, and the number of publications, patents, and research citations.
Among U.S. public universities, UC Berkeley ranked first, UCLA was second, UC San Diego placed fourth and UCSF was sixth.
American universities dominated the global rankings – with 229 U.S. institutions included. Harvard, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology took the top three spots. Following the U.S. for the number of institutions included were China, with 83 universities listed; Japan, with 74 universities; and the United Kingdom, with 65.
In a press release about its rankings, the Center for World University Rankings said it compiled its list based on objective and quantifiable data.
It measures quality of education, for example, by assessing the number of university alumni who have won major international awards, prizes and medals relative to the university’s size. It assesses alumni employment by looking at the number of university alumni who have held CEO positions at the world’s top companies, relative to the university’s size. And it gauges the quality of faculty by calculating the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes and medals.
