Call for volunteers and coat donations to help Oakland families, seniors and homeless

Join your UCOP colleagues and get into the season of giving by volunteering to be on the wait staff of the City of Oakland’s 25th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for low-income families, seniors and the homeless on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

You can also help by donating warm coats, which will be passed out to dinner guests.

If you want to help with the dinner on Nov. 22

Three volunteer shifts are available to help out with the dinner at the Oakland Marriott Hotel at the corner of Broadway and 11th St.:

  • 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
  • 11:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.
  • 1:15 – 3:15 p.m.

Participants will be asked to meet at the Franklin building security desk 20 minutes prior to a shift. Up to 60 UCOP staff will help set tables and serve food at the event.

To volunteer, please sign up online by the end of the day on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

This community volunteer opportunity is sponsored by the UC Oakland Partnership. President Napolitano has approved up to four hours of paid release time per month for employees to volunteer in UC Oakland Partnership-sponsored events that support Oakland’s government, nonprofit, business, philanthropic and religious communities. Before you sign up, please check with your supervisor for approval.

If you want to donate a warm coat

Donate gently used or new coats by Friday, Nov. 18 by placing them in the large marked containers in the Franklin building lobby by the security desk. The coats will be given to guests at the Thanksgiving dinner. All sizes are needed.

A few volunteers are needed to help organize the coat drive and also to escort our OP volunteer groups to the Thanksgiving dinner. Please contact Michael.Kusiak@ucop.edu if you can help.

Last year, OP staff collectively donated more than 100 coats, and more than 50 OP volunteers helped serve food at the event.
