Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity with the Capital Programs team

The UCOP Capital Programs Facilities and Asset Management team volunteered to build a playhouse for local kids at the Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley workshop in Oakland.

The UCOP Capital Programs Facilities and Asset Management team recently completed a volunteer day at the Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley workshop in Oakland, where they built a playhouse for local kids.

“It took a lot of effort to get everyone organized and make this event successful, but we pulled it off together!” said Facilities Asset Manager Chris Cardell.

A fulfilling experience

“Everyone had a wonderful time, learned about Habitat’s work and contributed towards building a world where everyone has a decent place to live,” said Chris.

His colleagues agreed:

Nicole Watamaniuk shared that she had always wanted to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. “Having never participated in carpentry work, I found the experience fun and fulfilling. It was so meaningful to help combat housing insecurity in such a tangible, uplifting and communal way.”

“Working in the workshop was gratifying because it was a way to make a positive and enduring difference in someone else’s life and have fun at the same time,” said Rich Powers.

James Sherman said he was “humbled by the collective power of human effort to promote a good cause. Not only was everyone in good spirits throughout the day, but they were also more than happy to contribute to a constructive effort that benefits others. Volunteering this way was an inspiration and a testimony to the power of human endeavor.”

Learn more about Habitat

Habitat for Humanity International’s (HHI) vision focuses on creating a world where everyone has a place to live. Locally, Habitat brings together people to build homes, communities and exemplify hope.

  • 90% of every Habitat home is built by volunteers.
  • Future homeowners contribute 200 to 300 hours to help build their own house.
  • Habitat homes are affordable because of volunteer labor, private financial donors and donations of land and building materials.
  • Habitat brings together volunteers from different backgrounds, beliefs and faiths who put aside differences and work together.

If you can’t attend the Capital Programs sessions, individual volunteer opportunities are also available. Contact Stacy Spence, corporate & community engagement specialist, Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley, or visit the Habitat for Humanity website for volunteer opportunities.
