The UC National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement’s eighth annual #SpeechMatters conference, “Preserving the Pillars of Free Expression,” taking place virtually on April 8, 2026. The event will convene national leaders from higher education, journalism, law and the arts to examine emerging challenges to free expression — and the role universities play in protecting open inquiry. President Milliken will help frame the conversation alongside Michelle Deutchman, executive director of the Center, underscoring the university’s commitment to free expression as a cornerstone of its teaching, research and public service mission.
