Learn about becoming an East Bay College Fund mentor

Have you ever thought of becoming a mentor to Oakland youth? Now is the time — you are needed!

President Napolitano has designated UCOP as a partner of Oakland Promise, an initiative to triple the number of Oakland students who graduate from college within the next 10 years. The lead agency, East Bay College Fund (EBCF) provides need-based college scholarships and mentoring to help qualified Oakland students prepare for, attend and succeed at UC campuses.

To learn more about mentoring, join staff from both UCOP and EBCF at a brown bag information session. Cookies provided but feel free to bring your lunch.

  • Date: Monday, Dec. 10
  • Time: 12 to 1 p.m.
  • Location: Franklin 9204

EBCF ensures that their scholars graduate college at four times the national average for low income students by pairing financial support with persistence services such as mentoring, advising, retreats and on-campus peer group support. 90 percent of their students are low-income and first in their family to attend college, and 85 percent of their students are African-American and Latino.

This year, EBCF hopes to match 300 dedicated new mentors with four-year scholarship recipients. You could become one of them! The amount of time required for volunteering is very reasonable: Mentors commit to attending two “retreats” and having at least one interaction per month with the student while they are in college — either in-person or by phone, text, Google Hangout or Skype.
