BSFO Health and Wellness Month continues with health equity panel and volunteer opportunity

The Black Staff and Faculty Organization (BSFO) is continuing its annual recognition of BSFO Health and Wellness Month. This year’s theme is “Whole Health Equity – Closing the Gap,” and all staff are invited to join in exploring health equity and practicing self-care.

Join BSFO for an informative panel discussion exploring the multifaceted nature of health equity featuring three prestigious doctors:

Medell Briggs-Malonson, M.D.

Medell Briggs-Malonson, M.D., Chief of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, UCLA Hospital and Clinic System
Dr. Briggs-Malonson is chief of health equity, diversity and inclusion for the UCLA Health System and an associate professor of emergency medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is responsible for the implementation and oversight of organizational structures and initiatives that promote inclusivity and equity among UCLA Health staff, patients and communities. Dr. Briggs-Malonson prides herself in building a culture of innovation, collaboration and excellence, values that have led her to become a nationally recognized health care improvement advisor, speaker and best-selling author. She has held several administrative and academic roles throughout her career, with a primary focus on innovative health care system redesign to advance health equity within diverse communities. Dr. Briggs-Malonson is co-chair of the National Coordinator Health Information Technology Advisory Committee.

Taisha Caldwell-Harvey, Ph.D.

Taisha Caldwell-Harvey, Ph.D., Founder and Operator, The Black Girl Doctor
Dr. Caldwell-Harvey is a licensed psychologist and founder of The Black Girl Doctor, a virtual therapy practice that specializes in supporting the mental health of professional Black women. She is a published author with more than 12 years of experience as a clinician and consultant, including seven years advising the UC system on best practices in mental health innovation. Dr. Caldwell-Harvey also serves as a mental health consultant and advisor to organizations committed to workplace wellness. She believes her purpose in life is to inspire people to dream bigger and is an advocate for Black joy as a social justice issue.

Anne Foster, M.D.

Anne Foster, M.D., Vice President/Chief Clinical (Strategy) Officer, UC Health
Dr. Foster is vice president and chief clinical strategy officer for University of California Health (UCH). She is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring and updating systemwide clinical initiatives to ensure the continued alignment between programs and the strategic goals, values and plans of the university and its health campuses. Dr. Foster is the UCH representative to the UC Council of Vice Chancellors for Research. She has been involved in creating the UC Climate Resilience program, funded by the state of California; expanding opportunities for the UC National Labs; and supporting consortia that are working to address health needs, including the UC Cancer Consortium. In addition to leading UCH Long-COVID initiatives, she oversees the Quality and Population Health Management Program and UC Health Clinical Quality Committee.

BSFO volunteer opportunity

Tuesday, Nov. 7, or Tuesday, Dec. 12, 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 – 3 p.m.

UCOP volunteers at a previous BSFO Alameda County Food Bank outreach event

All UCOP colleagues are invited to join BSFO for Community Outreach Events at the Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB). ACCFB’s mission and vision are to passionately pursue a hunger-free community and ensure children, adults and seniors in Alameda County do not worry about where their next meal is coming from. BSFO is seeking volunteers to help with sorting fresh produce and preparing emergency food boxes at the Oakland warehouse. Up to a maximum of eight volunteers per shift are needed (a total of 32 volunteers).
