Belonging and Inclusion Toward an Anti-Racist Organization
Tuesday, May 24, 2022, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
This workshop is an opportunity to deeply explore the application and behaviors of the UCOP Core Competency of Belonging and Inclusion. While not a new concept, the notion of creating inclusive workspaces where each person feels connected and a sense of belonging has increase exponentially with the increasing normalcy of remote engagement and our country’s continued tension around race.
Most diversity initiatives also include inclusion; some have added the “b” for belonging as part of improving office culture. However, these concepts are deep, rest in emotions and feelings, and can often be seen as an additional managerial hurdle. The skill set required for true inclusivity and belonging leans heavily upon excellent social-emotional skills, along with a deep awareness of one’s own values. The added element of race provides a tenuous backdrop onto which belonging, and inclusion must fall.
Inclusion and Belonging towards an anti-racist organization is a two-hour training session that outlines these facts, provides concrete examples for change, and asks the hard questions needed for change. Modules include:
- Defining race, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging
- Sharing inclusion & belonging examples within organizations
- Naming and discussing barriers to inclusionary practices at UCOP
- Completing the SEL Awareness Inventory
