Reminder: Don’t hang up if you dial 9-1-1 by mistake

Have you ever made the mistake of hitting two 1s when dialing a call outside the 510 area code? If so, you’ve have just dialed 9-1-1 and requested an emergency response team.
Believe it or not, this happens several times daily at UCOP’s Franklin Street office, so much so that the Oakland Police Department is making an appeal asking callers to stay on the line if this happens. Just wait for an answer and tell the dispatcher that you placed the call in error and there is no emergency.
“We just reported on this in March but it continues to be a problem,” says Roman Starno, chief building manager at 1111 Franklin St. “It’s easy to make this mistake, but please don’t hang up and assume the call didn’t go through. Just stay on the line and explain so the police don’t make an unnecessary trip.”
