President’s Speaker May 3: Haile Debas on global health

Haile T. Debas, M.D., director of the UC Global Health Institute, will speak Thursday, May 3, 12 to 1 p.m. in Franklin Lobby 1 as part of UCOP’s President’s Speaker Series.
Debas, who is recognized internationally for his contributions to academic medicine and global health, will speak about his work with the Global Health Institute, founded in 2003 to create a vision and provide institutional leadership for global health at the University of California. He will also show a 15-minute video spotlighting the enthusiasm of and fieldwork accomplished by UC students worldwide.
At UCSF, Debas has served as dean of medicine, vice chancellor of medical affairs and chancellor. He is also the Maurice Galante Distinguished Professor of Surgery and served as chair of surgery from 1987 to 1993.
Under Debas’s stewardship, UCSF School of Medicine became a national model for medical education, and he played a key role in developing UCSF’s campus at Mission Bay. He has held leadership positions with the American Surgical Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges and other professional organizations.
Among his many honors, Debas is a member of the Institute of Medicine, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a 2012 recipient of the UCSF Medal for his academic and leadership contributions. A native of Eritrea, he received his M.D. from McGill University and completed his surgical training at the University of British Columbia.
The President’s Speaker Series, “On California,” was initiated by President Mark Yudof last year to showcase the talent and public contributions of UC faculty, alumni and other prominent Californians in the areas of education, policy/politics and research.
