Use your earned vacation to recharge during winter holiday

The winter holidays are just around the corner, so start scheduling vacation leave now to rest, recharge and spend time with family and friends.

All UCOP offices will be closed from Dec. 22, 2012, through Jan. 1, 2013, except for essential services. Offices will reopen on Jan. 2, 2013. (Each UCOP vice president will determine staffing to cover any essential services that must be maintained.)

The closure period includes four holidays on Dec. 24, 25 and 31 and Jan. 1, and three working days on Dec. 26, 27 and 28. You have the option of using accrued vacation, compensatory time off or leave without pay for the three working days.

If you have not accrued sufficient vacation leave by December to cover those three days, arrangements will be made to allow you to borrow against future vacation time.

UC provides vacation leave — also known as paid time off for employees at some locations — as a benefit to staff for rest and renewal throughout the year.

“Paid vacation leave is a key component of our benefits package,” said Dwaine B. Duckett, UC systemwide vice president of human resources. “Using your vacation time is healthy.  It is a good way to focus on critical work/life balance, get recharged and come back refreshed. We offer it so people can use it.”

Not taking vacation is a drag on personal productivity. There should be very few circumstances in which employees do not take vacation leave. Over the long term the impact is negative on the individual and his or her work.

You can find out how much vacation you currently have accrued by checking your time and attendance record. If you are approaching or have already reached your maximum vacation accrual limit, you should work with your supervisor to schedule additional time off.
