Help those in need: Summer food drive closes Friday

UCOP’s summer food drive closes this Friday, Aug. 30, so plan ahead to help the Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB) stock its shelves and feed the local community.

You can contribute healthy, non-perishable canned and packaged food. Just drop your items in the collection barrels located in the Franklin Building lobby.

ACCFB last year collected 94,000 pounds of food during its summer food drive, helping 49,000 East Bay residents every week. Those in need include many children who, during summer vacation, miss out on the nutritious meals they normally get through their school lunch program.

The food bank is most in need of these items:

  • Canned fruit and vegetables
  • Canned meats and fish
  • Low-salt soups, stews and chili
  • Pasta and tomato sauce
  • Beans and rice
  • Peanut butter
  • Low-sugar cereal and oatmeal
  • Powdered milk

Please note that the food bank cannot accept donations of any food in glass containers, perishable food, frozen food, fresh produce, soda, baby food or formula and non-food items.
