President’s Speaker Series: President Yudof today, Tuesday, Aug. 27

President Mark G. Yudof will make his last public appearance before UCOP staff at the President’s Speaker Series, today, Tuesday, Aug. 27, 12 to 1 p.m. in Franklin Lobby 1 Conference Room.

In 2011, Yudof created the President’s Speaker Series to bring UC’s talent and contributions to life for UCOP staff in the center of downtown Oakland, which can feel removed from the rich academic environment of UC’s campuses and medical centers.

Yudof, the 19th president of the University of California, took office on June 16, 2008. He will step down in September and, following a year’s sabbatical, return to teaching at Berkeley Law. He will close his five-year tenure here by joining the distinguished roster of speakers who have participated in the series.

Before joining UC, Mark G. Yudof served as chancellor of the University of Texas (UT) system from 2002–08 and president of the University of Minnesota from 1997–2002. Previously he was a faculty member and administrator at UT Austin for 25 years.

An authority on constitutional law, freedom of expression and education law, Yudof was a member of the law faculty at UT Austin. He is the author and editor of numerous publications on free speech and gender discrimination, including the textbook Educational Policy and the Law, and the recipient of numerous honors.

In its first two years, the President’s Speaker Series has brought 11 stellar faculty, staff, alumni and others to entertain and enlighten UCOP staff. Speakers have included Cal Stadium engineer and Berkeley alum David Friedman, 30-year UCOP staffer and author Patricia Pelfrey and UC Santa Barbara educator and former vice provost Russell Rumberger.
