Celebrate National Book Month: author Reyna Grande speaks today

Join award-winning novelist and memoirist Reyna Grande today, Tuesday, Oct. 15, 12 to 1 p.m. in Franklin Lobby 1 Conference Room.
October is National Book Month, and UCOP’s Education Partnerships (EP) is sponsoring the event to celebrate the importance of books to the University of California and its educational mission.
Grande will talk about her latest book, The Distance Between Us, a memoir described by the Los Angeles Times as “the Angela’s Ashes of the modern Mexican immigrant experience.” The first 50 attendees will receive free copies of the book, and light refreshments will be served.
Also the author of two novels, Across a Hundred Mountains and Dancing with Butterflies, Grande is the recipient of the American Book Award, El Premio Aztlan Literary Award and the Latino Book Award. In 2012 she was a finalist for the prestigious National Book Critics Circle Awards.
A native of Mexico, she holds a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and film & video from UC Santa Cruz, teaches creative writing at UCLA Extension and is at work on her next novel.
Be sure to also check out the exhibit in the Franklin lobby celebrating the role of books, reading and writing in four Education Partnerships programs — the California Reading and Literature Project, the California Writing Project, the Puente Project and the Teacher Education Program — designed to help K–12 students achieve success in college and in their careers.
