UCOP is pitching in to help the hungry
More people than ever people are coming to the Alameda County Community Food Bank for help. The group estimates that it now serves 1 in 6 Alameda County residents – nearly half of them children and teens.
UC’s Office of the President is pitching in with a food drive between now and Jan. 11. It’s easy to participate. Just drop off a donation of non-perishable food in one of the collections bins in the UCOP Franklin Street lobby anytime between now and Jan. 11.
The Food Bank especially needs the following items:
- Canned fruit and vegetables
- Canned meats and fish
- Peanut butter
- Pasta
- Beans
- Rice
- Canned soup (low-salt)
- Low-sugar cereal and oatmeal
- Tomato sauce
- Powdered milk
The food bank has seen referrals for emergency food help double since 2007, and the 2010 holiday season is expected to mark the highest demand period in the food bank’s 25-year history.
The non-profit currently provides enough food each week for about 300,000 meals, distributing it through a network of food pantries, soup kitchens, child-care centers, senior centers, after-school programs and other community-based organizations.
