Avoid repetitive stress and fall injuries

Repetitive stress and slips, trips and falls accounted for 77 percent of the injuries at UCOP offices in 2010. Both types of injuries can be easily prevented, so it is important to be attentive to what you are doing at all times.

“When you are sitting at your computer for long hours, it is important to take breaks, to stretch and to rotate tasks frequently, especially when you are busy,” says Larry Wong, program manager in the UCOP Office of Risk Services.

Proper posture and an ergonomically correct office setup are also important for minimizing injury. If you need to schedule a workstation evaluation, contact Risk Services at ehs@ucop.edu or 987-9772.

Slips, trips and falls can be avoided by wearing sensible footwear and watching your steps, especially on stairs, elevated surfaces, wet floors or uneven surfaces like elevator gaps. Be careful with activities like texting on the run, which can make you even more vulnerable to slipping or falling.
