Space still available for tours of “Hopper” supercomputing facility
One tour is filled to capacity, but spaces are still available to see one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, known as “Hopper,” at UC’s Oakland Scientific Facility. The tours are cosponsored by OP Staff Assembly and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Staff Association.
The facility, officially known as the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), is located at UCOP’s 20th St. facility at 415 20th St.
The primary scientific computing facility for the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy, NERSC is used by more than 4,000 scientists to perform basic scientific research across a wide range of disciplines, including climate modeling, materials research, simulations of the early universe and investigations of protein structure.
Tours will last one hour and openings are still available on the following dates:
- Tuesday, May 15, 10 a.m.
- Thursday, May 17, 12 p.m.
If you are interested, email OP Staff Assembly at opstaffassembly@ucop.edu with your preferred date; group size is limited, so act now to save your spot.
Due to facility security, you will need your UCOP ID badge, and anyone who is not a U.S. citizen should also indicate your country of origin when you RSVP. Be sure to allow travel time and arrive a few minutes early so tours can begin on time.
NERSC is a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and provides some of the largest computing and storage systems available anywhere in the world.
